The Freedom
of Information Act 2000
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 received
royal assent on 30th November 2000. The
purpose of the Act is to promote greater
openness by public authorities. It aims to
do this my making provision for the
disclosure of information held by public
bodies or by persons providing services for
them.
The Freedom of Information Act will amend
the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Public
Records Act 1958 and will supersede the
current Code of Practice on Access to
Government Information 1997.
The Freedom of Information Act does not
supersede the protection given under the
Data Protection Act 1998.
